Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF (VTI) is one of Vanguard’s products that offers exposure to the whole US investable equity market. With approximately $460 billion in assets, it is the fourth largest ETF trading on the US market and the second largest in Vanguard’s catalogue of ETFs. Upon its inception back in May 2001, VTI tracked the Wilshire 5000 Total Market Index and that was until April 2005 when it transitioned to tracking MSCI US Broad Market Index. Later in June of 2013, the fund transitioned to track CRSP US Total Market Index instead and it remains to do so till this day.

CRSP US Total Market Index was founded in 2011 by the Center For Research in Security Prices, an affiliate of the University of Chicago. It is a comprehensive benchmark that encompasses the entire US stock market including large-cap, mid-cap, small-cap, and micro-cap stocks. The index provides a broad representation of the overall market performance resulting in diversified exposure across all sectors and industries. It does so by tracking 3,579 companies with the smallest company having a market cap of $2 million and the largest company $3.3 trillion. The CRSP US Total Market Index market cap is $55 trillion (as of June 28, 2024).
