AGNC Investment Corp. functions as a U.S.-based real estate investment trust (REIT). Its portfolio primarily consists of residential mortgage-backed securities and collateralized mortgage obligations, with both principal and interest guaranteed by either U.S. government-sponsored enterprises or direct U.S. government agencies. These investments are largely financed through secured borrowing arrangements known as repurchase agreements. Having opted for REIT status under the 1986 Internal Revenue Code, the company avoids federal corporate income taxation, provided it distributes a minimum of 90% of its taxable earnings to shareholders. Established in 2008 and headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, the firm was known as American Capital Agency Corp. until its rebranding as AGNC Investment Corp. in September 2016.
