Description
Southern Copper Corporation is a mining entity that conducts operations spanning the discovery, extraction, smelting, and refinement of copper and various other minerals. Its geographical footprint extends across Peru, Mexico, Argentina, Ecuador, and Chile. The company's core activities include the extraction and processing of copper ore through milling and flotation techniques to yield copper and molybdenum concentrates. These concentrates are then further processed via smelting to create blister and anode copper, with subsequent refining of the anode copper into copper cathodes. Additionally, Southern Copper generates molybdenum concentrate, sulfuric acid, and recovers refined silver, gold, and other by-products. It also undertakes the mining and processing of zinc and lead. In Peru, the corporation manages the Toquepala and Cuajone open-pit mining facilities, alongside a smelter and a refinery. Its Mexican operations encompass the comprehensive La Caridad complex, which features an open-pit copper mine, an ore concentrator, a solvent extraction-electrowinning (SX-EW) plant, a smelter, a refinery, and a rod plant. Also situated in Mexico, the Buenavista site includes an open-pit copper mine, two copper concentrators, and two active SX-EW plants. Beyond these, the company maintains five underground mines that collectively produce zinc, lead, copper, silver, and gold. It also operates a coal mine, yielding coal and coke, and a dedicated zinc refinery. Southern Copper holds substantial exploration concessions across its operating regions, specifically 82,134 hectares in Peru, 493,533 hectares in Mexico, 246,346 hectares in Argentina, 29,888 hectares in Chile, and 7,299 hectares in Ecuador. Established in 1952, Southern Copper Corporation has its principal office in Phoenix, Arizona, and functions as a subsidiary of Americas Mining Corporation.
