Description
Waste Management, Inc., operating through its various subsidiaries, delivers comprehensive environmental services centered on waste management to a diverse clientele, including residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal customers across North America. A primary service involves the collection and transportation of refuse and recyclable materials, moving them from their point of generation to either a transfer station, a material recovery facility (MRF), or a final disposal site. The company also maintains a significant infrastructure, owning and operating numerous transfer stations, and actively develops and runs facilities in the United States that convert landfill gas into energy. As of December 31, 2021, its extensive network included the ownership or operation of 255 solid waste landfills, 5 specialized hazardous waste landfills, 96 material recovery facilities, and 340 transfer stations. Beyond these core activities, Waste Management offers materials processing and commodities recycling services. It also acts as a recycling broker, overseeing the marketing of recyclable goods for other entities, and provides various strategic business solutions. Furthermore, the company extends its expertise to construction and remediation services; handles the disposal of challenging materials like fly ash and residues resulting from the combustion of coal and other fuel stocks; provides full-service, on-site (in-plant) waste management and consulting; and offers specialized disposal solutions for oil and gas exploration and production operations. Founded in 1987, the company was initially known as USA Waste Services, Inc. before officially rebranding to Waste Management, Inc. in 1998. Its corporate headquarters are located in Houston, Texas.
