The AES Corporation functions as a wide-ranging energy enterprise, encompassing both electricity generation and utility services. The company owns and manages numerous power facilities, producing and supplying electricity to a diverse clientele, including other utility providers, industrial consumers, and various intermediate buyers. Beyond this, AES also acts as a utility operator, acquiring or generating electricity, then distributing and transmitting it directly to end-users in the residential, commercial, industrial, and governmental spheres. Furthermore, it actively participates in the wholesale electricity market by producing and selling power. AES utilizes a broad spectrum of energy sources and innovative technologies for power generation, such as coal, natural gas, hydroelectric, wind, solar, and biomass, alongside other renewable options like energy storage solutions and landfill gas. Its operational generation portfolio boasts an approximate capacity of 31,459 megawatts. The corporation maintains a significant global presence, with operations spanning the United States, Puerto Rico, numerous Central and South American countries (El Salvador, Chile, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico), the wider Caribbean, Europe, and Asia. Established in 1981, the company was initially named Applied Energy Services, Inc., before rebranding to The AES Corporation in April 2000. Its headquarters are situated in Arlington, Virginia.
