Description
Albemarle Corporation is a global enterprise dedicated to the creation, production, and distribution of advanced specialty chemicals. The company's operations are divided into three principal divisions: Lithium, Bromine, and Catalysts. The Lithium segment manufactures and supplies a variety of lithium-based compounds, including lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide, lithium chloride, and other specialized lithium products. It also provides essential reagents such as butyllithium and lithium aluminum hydride. These materials are vital for numerous applications, such as the production of lithium batteries for consumer electronics and electric vehicles, high-performance lubricating greases, thermoplastic elastomers used in items like car tires, shoe soles, and plastic bottles, and as catalysts in various chemical reactions. Their utility further extends to organic synthesis processes within steroid chemistry, vitamin production, life sciences, and the pharmaceutical industry. Beyond lithium, this segment also offers cesium compounds for chemical and pharmaceutical sectors, along with zirconium, barium, and titanium components specifically for pyrotechnical uses, including airbag initiators. Completing its service offerings, it provides technical guidance for handling reactive lithium products and recycling services for lithium-containing by-products. The Bromine segment focuses on elemental bromine and an array of bromine-derived fire safety innovations. Its product range includes distinct specialty chemicals like elemental bromine, alkyl and inorganic bromides, brominated powdered activated carbon, and other fine bromine chemicals. These are applied in chemical synthesis, drilling and completion fluids for the oil and gas industry, mercury emission control, water purification, and the processing of beef and poultry, among various other industrial applications. Additionally, this segment produces tertiary amines, which are key ingredients in surfactants, biocides, and disinfectant and sanitizing agents. The Catalysts segment specializes in producing catalysts for hydroprocessing, isomerization, and alkylation reactions. It also supplies fluidized catalytic cracking catalysts and their associated additives, as well as organometallic compounds and curatives. Albemarle's chemical solutions cater to a wide array of sectors, including energy storage, petroleum refining, consumer electronics, construction, the automotive industry, lubricants, pharmaceuticals, and crop protection. The company was founded in 1887 and its headquarters are situated in Charlotte, North Carolina.
