Marathon Petroleum Corporation operates as an integrated downstream energy enterprise, primarily active within the United States. Its operations are organized into two main divisions: Refining & Marketing, and Midstream. The Refining & Marketing segment processes crude oil and other feedstocks at its refineries, which are strategically located across the Gulf Coast, Mid-Continent, and West Coast regions of the U.S. This segment also acquires refined products and ethanol for onward distribution. Its diverse product portfolio includes transportation fuels such as various grades of gasoline, heavy fuel oil, and asphalt, alongside specialty chemicals like aromatics, propane, propylene, and sulfur. These refined commodities are sold to wholesale marketing customers domestically and internationally, to buyers in the spot market, to independent entrepreneurs who manage Marathon-branded retail outlets, and through long-term fuel supply agreements to direct dealer locations, predominantly under the ARCO brand. The Midstream segment is responsible for the transportation, storage, distribution, and commercialization of crude oil and refined products, utilizing a vast network of logistics assets, pipelines, terminals, towboats, and barges. Furthermore, this division handles the gathering, processing, and conveyance of natural gas, as well as managing the full value chain — from collection and transport to fractionation, storage, and marketing — of natural gas liquids. As of December 31, 2021, the company oversaw a network of 7,159 branded jobber outlets spread across 37 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, and Mexico, all operated by independent business owners. Marathon Petroleum Corporation was established in 1887 and is headquartered in Findlay, Ohio.
