The Fidelity Freedom Index 2040 Fund aims for high total returns until its target retirement date. Following this, the fund's objective transitions to seeking substantial current income, with capital appreciation as a secondary goal. It achieves these aims by investing in a diversified portfolio composed of underlying Fidelity funds, which include U.S. and international equity funds, bond funds, and short-term funds. With the exception of any money market funds, each of these constituent funds is designed to mirror the total return performance of a particular market index.
